Anxiety & Trauma Resources

September 6, 2020

If you listened to last week’s podcast with Crystal Whitlow, you know that EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – is one of the newest and most effect treatments for “Big T” and “Little T” trauma, as well as anxiety.  Crystal also shared that it might be helpful for the “sustained low grade trauma” many of us have been feeling through the global pandemic and social unrest of the last year.

I wanted to share with you a few of the resources she discussed.  Ironically, one of them – the work of Dr. Bessel van der Kolk – was also mentioned in The Meaning Project podcast Episode 18 with Dan Hostetler, where we discussed using Logotherapy at his substance abuse treatment center in Chicago, IL.  I highly recommend the video below, or, if you like, you can read more about the physical impact of trauma in his bestselling book The Body Keeps the Score.

She also mentioned Dr. Daniel J. Siegel – whom I admittedly know little about.  However, I have seen his name come across many conferences I probably should have attended, and I know he is very well known for the positive psychology of mindful at the Mindsight Institute.

Finally, you may have heard me mention Dr. Gabor Mate before.  His book, In the Realm of the Hungry Ghosts is a fascinating case study of his work in the drug-infested streets of Vancouver, Canada, and the prolific effects of trauma he experienced there.  You can hear more about his studies in trauma and addiction below.
