Labor Day – The Meaning of Work

September 4, 2023

“The work in itself does not make the person indispensable and irreplaceable; it only gives him the chance to be so…

…the job at which one work is not what counts, but rather the manner in which one does the work.” – Viktor Frankl

As we take a break to enjoy this Labor Day holiday, it can be a reminder to step back and ask yourself, “what do I bring to my work?”  Do you bring passion and energy, a desire to transcend your self in service of others?  Or, perhaps, maybe not?  And, if not, why not?  We spend a signficant portion of our lifes at work with others – we have 8-10 hours each day to discover meaning and to make an impact.  If we are not, what needs to change?

“People’s natural relationship to their employment as the area for possible actualization of creative values and self-fulfillment often is distorted by prevailing conditions at work.”

You always have the choice to change yourself – change your attiude, change your perspective, change the way you approach your work.  However, we do recognize, sometimes issues may be related to the conditions at work.  In that event, I challenge you to work to change those!  You can have an impact on culture, communication, conflict, and a variety of variables that might feel “bigger” than you.  Find a way to be indispensable, and you will see the conditions around you change.

“…treasure what it means to do a day’s work. It’s our one and only chance to do something productive today, and it’s certainly not available to someone merely because he is the high bidder. A day’s work is your chance to do art, to create a gift, to do something that matters. As your work gets better and your art becomes more important, competition for your gifts will increase and you’ll discover that you can be choosier about whom you give them to.”  – Seth Godin: Linchpin, Are You Indispensable?

Once again, I am sorry to have to report, NO PODCAST THIS WEEK…  Not because of Labor Day or any sabbatical I have taken, but because of the hiatus the internet at the “Dr. Dan Studios” has taken…  Hopefully we get that corrected and can get back to consistent podcast production soon!  In the meantime, check out the podcasts from my peers at The Meaning Academy:
