We are almost a week into the new year – a time where many of us are still pushing hard to move forward with those big resolutions, or maybe reviewing where we may need to adjust our goals.
Everyday life isn’t always about “The Big Goal”, it’s about making the next right choice, or finding meaning in the moment that leads to accomplishing that goal (see “Want v. Ought” a few weeks ago for more on that idea). You don’t get up one day and simply run a marathon, lose 20 pounds, and have a perfect marriage and fulfilling career.
Everyday life is about the occasional grind of making a new choice we may not have made in the past – with the understanding and mindfulness that it will get us to that big goal.
It’s about not hitting snooze, and getting up a little earlier to exercise or read.
It’s about reading a few pages in that business book or career guide, rather than scrolling for a few more minutes on social media.
It’s about putting the phone, tablet, laptop down when your children, partner, or spouse is trying to talk to you about something that is important to them.
It’s about choosing to do something meaningful with the important people in your life, even though you may not want to, or would rather sit on the couch and drink a beer.
It’s about choosing sparkling water or tea, or any other more healthy drink, rather than having that beer or soda.
It’s about choosing the grilled chicken salad over the fried chicken burger.
The BIG GOALS don’t happen every moment. They are made up of a series of “right choices” – meaningful decisions in the moment – that bring us to the culmination of that goal. Or, as I like to say in my office, “a few small changes, made consistently, in different areas in your life, can have significant results.”
Happy New Year, everyone. I hope it is a happy, healthy, and meaningful 2020 for you and your family. – Dan
