Labor Day and Meaning in Work

September 2, 2018

Today we honor the American labor movement, and the American laborer for all they have added to the “strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the country.”

Hopefully, you are able to take some time away from labor to enjoy meaningful fun, hobby, or socializing.  All of which are equally as important as labor in living a balanced and healthy life.

As you take time with family or friends, perhaps you will find a moment to consider this, “‘good work’ is then equal to ‘meaningful work’, and ‘meaningful work’, in turn, refers to work that brings something meaningful into the world or that changes something that exists into something better.  In short, it brings something good closer to perfection.”  – Dr. Elisabeth Lukas, The Therapist and the Soul

It’s not just about a paycheck and something to do for 8-12 hours a day during the week.  Meaningful work makes us better, it makes us healthier and should help us to be happier.  And in striving to bring something, anything, “closer to perfection”, surely we are making our world a little better.

So enjoy your time today, rest and relax.  When you go back to work tomorrow, do good work, do meaningful work, and make yourself and your world better.
