Changing the Substance Abuse Epidemic

April 29, 2019

As you may know, our country is in the grips of a substance abuse epidemic.  Lives are lost every day.

The addict is not the homeless man on the street drinking out of a brown bag.  He could be your neighbor, she could be your friend.  It’s not always obvious.

The alcoholic doesn’t start drinking to become an alcoholic.  They drink because it feels good, maybe to forget, maybe to avoid life – but eventually alcohol becomes a necessity that they will give up everything to have.

The heroin addict doesn’t start using needles.  Many are treated for pain with prescription opiates – after months or years on them, it’s hard to quit, even when the doctor won’t write a prescription.  Illegal substances are often easier to come by than legal ones these days.

The meth addict never thought they would get addicted, but they found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, and could resist the pressure to try it.  It was all downhill from there.

Addiction knows no boundaries – it will attack anyone regardless of age, gender, culture, or socio-economic status.

We’re going to put a stop to it in our community. We are very excited to share with you what we have been working on – stop by David’s Courage this coming Sunday to see what we have been doing, and to share in our plan to change the course of addiction.  I look forward to seeing you there!
