Careful Cultivation: What the Bonsai Tree Taught Me About Overwhelm

May 3, 2026

Lately, it feels like I’ve been burning the candle at all five ends.
Somewhere between busy, overwhelmed, and maybe a little frustrated.

One of my business partners said, “I can feel the overwhelm in your texts.”
My first reaction? Yeah, whatever…
But the truth is—I respect him. And he’s right.

It’s been a full stretch: packed work weeks, Saturday meetings, squeezing in digital work on a Sunday. And in the middle of all that, I restarted my podcast after nearly 10 months away.

Funny thing is… back then I told myself I paused because life was “too busy.”
But looking at it now? I’m way busier today than I was then.

The difference?
Now I feel aligned. Energized. Motivated. There are opportunities everywhere—and that’s a gift.

But here’s what this week made clear:
More isn’t always better. Growth still requires pruning.

This year, I’ve felt drawn to the idea of the bonsai tree.

It started small—building a Lego bonsai (not usually my thing, but surprisingly calming).
Then my wife and I took a bonsai class—grounding, intentional, connecting.

What I learned is this:
A bonsai isn’t a specific type of tree. It’s any tree, carefully cultivated in a small space.

Just like life.

It doesn’t grow beautifully by doing more—it grows through intentional shaping.
Through trimming what’s unnecessary so what matters can thrive.

So that’s where I am right now:
Pruning the unruly branches.
Creating space.
Choosing what stays—and what goes.

Because I don’t want overwhelm to be the cost of opportunity.

I want:
• Clear mornings (no more heart-pounding wake-ups)
• Consistent workouts
• Focused energy
• A life that feels as good as it looks from the outside

Careful cultivation.

That’s the work this week.

What’s one thing you might need to prune right now? 🌱
