Too Much Growth?

July 7, 2019

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Logotherapy concept “noö-dynamics” – the idea that the human spirit calls us to grow and evolve, to become more than we are; even though there are times that our minds, our bodies, maybe even modern society, tells us to seek equilibrium – maybe even stagnation.

The conflict we often feel between choosing to grow or choosing to stagnate is truly a HEALTHY CONFLICT.  It pushes us to choose to be more, to do more, to be better – a better person, spouse, parent, friend, employee, employer, community member…  This internal conflict pushes us to become more than what we are.

But when is it too much?  How do we know when it is time for balance, or even the time to stagnate, to rest?

To go for a run or to sit on the couch?

To work out in the yard or take a nap in a hammock?

To move your career forward or to watch a movie with the kids?

That’s were another idea from Logotherapy comes to mind – the idea of choosing The Meaning of the Moment.

In every moment life asks us to choose.  Every choice gives us the opportunity to discover new meaning.  Meaning can be discovered actively, in creating and doing; but it can also be discovered passively, in experiencing and simply living.

Sometimes choosing not to grow in the moment; choosing to rest, to simply experience life, can be just as meaningful in choosing a more active course.

Every moment asks us to choose.  Life asks much of us. Choose that which is meaningful.
