Phoenix Revival

October 26, 2025

Through my journeys in the past few weeks I was recommeded to read a book – an amazing story – a story of intense trauma and revival.  A story most of us can’t relate to directly, but a situation we can all recognize in our lives, in some parts.  This book, Phoenix Revival, was recommended to me by a Veteran who now works in the psychedelic healing space.  A man I trusted with my personal safety and spiritual journey.  And, although I am not ready to share my personal journey, I thought this book would be a resource you could enjoy – and perhaps grow from – as much as I did.  And, seriously, what a gorgeous cover!!  I hope you read it.  Enjoy.  – Dan

Synopsis

On January 15, 2014, U.S. Navy fighter pilot Lieutenant Kegan “Smurf” Gill was flying a F/A‑18E Super Hornet when his aircraft entered an uncontrollable dive, forcing him to eject at an unprecedented speed of 695 mph — marking what is described as the fastest survived ejection in naval aviation history. After ejecting into the Atlantic, Gill faced catastrophic injuries, multiple surgeries, and a long, torturous recovery. What follows is a raw and unflinching memoir of his battle to reclaim his physical, mental, and spiritual health. ballastbooks.com+2Goodreads+2

Key themes and milestones in his journey include:

  • The physical aftermath: more than a dozen surgeries, severe injuries, the possibility that his flying career was over. ballastbooks.com+1

  • The mental and emotional struggle: dealing with traumatic brain injury (TBI), post‐traumatic stress (PTS), and navigating a healthcare system (including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) that often failed to provide adequate support. Goodreads+2ballastbooks.com+2

  • Substance and treatment challenges: prescription drug dependency resulting from trauma management, and the exploration of alternative therapies (including psychedelic‐assisted therapies) as part of his recovery. ballastbooks.com+1

  • The comeback: remarkable return to flying, transformation into an ultra‐endurance athlete, motivational speaker, and advocate — embodying rising from the ashes like the mythic phoenix. Goodreads+1

Why it stands out

  • The ejection event itself is extraordinary, making the book not just a combat/aviation memoir but a survival story on a dramatic physical scale.

  • Gill’s honesty about his fall — into injury, dependency, system failure — gives the book emotional depth and broad appeal beyond aviation-enthusiasts.

  • The arc from crisis to revival offers hope and practical insight for veterans, wounded service personnel, and anyone navigating significant trauma.

  • The subtitle, The Aftermath of Naval Aviation’s Fastest Survived Ejection, signals an emphasis not just on the incident, but on what happens afterwards — which often is the harder story.

Target audience

This book will resonate with:

  • Military/aviation followers who want a first‐hand account of a near‐catastrophic event and its aftermath.

  • Survivors of trauma (combat, injury, accident) looking for hope and recovery narratives.

  • People interested in mental‐health, brain‐injury, addiction, and alternative therapy journeys.

  • Motivational readers who appreciate stories of resilience, redemption and transformation.
