Today could be a day just like any other. However, we have attached significant meaning to the last day of the year, its last few seconds, and the ushering in of the next calendar year.
This is an excellent opportunity to take a moment to reminisce over the accomplishments and joys of the past 365 days. It is also a chance to remember or memorialize the sorrows and sadnesses of the past year. What was good or great about 2018? What were the struggles you had to endure or grow through?
Tomorrow, many of us will set about guiding our lives in the next year through resolutions and goals. Cognitive behavioral psychology tells us to set S.M.A.R.T. goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Losing weight, completing a race, changing careers, or pursuing a degree, these are all examples of S.M.A.R.T. goals.
But what are the goals for the next year that will help you discover meaning? What will you create in the world? What experiences are you looking forward to or planning? How will you transcend yourself just a little to love your community or those closest to you just a little better?
Happy New Year everyone – may 2019 be one of your best years yet. I look forward to working with you to make sure it is. – Dan
